Second largest city
Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia with over 100 thousand inhabitants. It is the capital of Lower Styria region. It has been organizing ski word cup ladies events for years. In recent year it has put himself on a football map too, with NK Maribor reaching Champions league.
Rich in history and places to see
You may as well start your sightseeing at Maribor castle. It was built in 15th century by Emperor Friderik III to fortify the town wall. Nowadays it's surrounded by lively squares of Trg Generala Maistra, Grajski Trg and Trg svobode. It also home of the regional museum and holds many collections of great value. The Cathedral is another distinct feature. The origins are even older than those of Maribor castle. The construction started in the 12th century, different parts have been added later and the bell tower is almost 60 metres high.
What about activities in Maribor
There are many other interesting buildings and monuments to explore, but Maribor has always been closely connected to river Drava. It offers plenty of activities and fun. One can visit a regional park Drava, or Maribor island, or just hang out at Lent.
Just above Maribor is a church of St. Barbara. There is a lovely trail leading up there through vineyards. Just bellow the summit you can have a good view of the town. Another similar site is Piramida. Half an hour from the City park there is a hill that offers a good view of the town.
Don't pass Pohorje
Other numerous hiking and biking trails can keep you busy for days, but make sure not to miss Pohorje. It's a well-known ski resort, with many natural sights.
Maribor is also a good starting point to explore an Eastern Slovenia wine region, known for many excellent products. The quickest way to reach places like Lendava, Ljutomer, Ptuj, Gornja Radgona and bring a few bottles back is by car. We promise you that on your way you will enjoy all views of landscape too.
