Idilic Bohinj
The word "idilic" most certainly very well describes Bohinj, which is absolutely beautiful in all months of the year. In summer this is a perfect spot to cool down and freshen up, while in colder winter months it turns to a proper winter wonderland.
The interesting fact about Bohinj is that it is not a town or a village to be exact, it is neither named after some. Bohinj is actually an geographical area that includes a valley, various smaller villages and hills and of course the famous Bohinj Lake at southeast part of Julian Alps.,
A big part of Bohinj or whole Bohinj Valley is right in the heart of Triglav National Park. The part that Bohinj is most known in Slovenia and around the world for is definitely Bohinj Lake.
Bohinj lies within The Alps and is a part of Triglav national park. By that, nature around it is well preserved.
Famous writer Agatha Christie made a remark about our breathtaking Bohinj. She said it was "too beautfiul for a muder". She vacationed here in Slovenia in 1967 with her husband, where she came to enjoy beautiful nature in privacy and not to write. A lot of world known actors, writers, politicians, athletes and others are also regular visitors of Slovenia and its beauty.
What to do in Bohinj?
Bohinj Lake is our biggest lake in Slovenia. With its length of 4100m and width 1200m, the lake is truly one of things, which we all have to see or even better experience at least once in our life.
Bohinj’s main feature is Lake Bohinj but it’s also the center of many activities like:

- cycling,
- jogging, hiking,
- sightseeing
- Boat rides on the lake
- Kayak rides
- Walk / run around the lake

Just above the Lake Bohinj is Vogel. A well-known winter ski center, very much alive in the summer too. It is accessible by either cable car or on foot and has a variety of lovely trails.
There is also a mountain bike park on Vogel and one must not forget its popularity within paragliding community.
Climbing mountains is another important reason why visitors come to Bohinj. Mount Triglav is one of them. It's a challenge, but the easiest route to the top doesn't require special climbing skill. Good physical condition and proper clothing are recommended, though. On your way, climbers can stop at Triglav lakes. Some of them are just ponds really, but the water is spectacularly clear.
Savica waterfall Another popular landmark in Bohinj is Savica waterfall. It’s probably the most famous waterfall in Slovenia. It forms a pool, artificially supported by the dam. There is also the viewing point on top of the gorge. Savica waterfall is some 4 kilometers away from Ukanc, you can either walk or drive there.
Historically Bohinj was centre of dairy farming and tightly connected with cheese-making, which quickly became the main part of Bohinj farming. Today we can say that there is almost no store that has not Bohinj cheese included in their offer as well, which has some similar look as Swissh cheese.
Whilie visiting Bohinj in our opinion one should most certainly not leave Bohinj without a good piece of traditional Bohinj cheese to take with them.
