The Cradle of Lipizzaner
Lipica is one of the best known Slovenia's tourist attractions. It is not just the cradle of all the Lipizzaner horses, a stud farm and major riding centre in Slovenia, it is also a good starting point for exploring a beautiful region of Karst.
What to do in Lipica
Lipica offers plenty of fun. You can visit the stud farm, ride famous Lipizzaner horse, attend a riding school, see a classical riding school performance. They also offer a special programme for kids. Besides that, one can play a game of golf, or take a bike tour and explore a unique natural and cultural heritage of Karst.
Beyond Lipica
Be sure not to miss Botanical garden in Sežana. It dates back to 1840 and nowadays features almost 2 hundred woody species and more than hundred different exotic plants. The Karst region is known for caves. Vilenica may not be as famous as Postojna Caves, but it is the oldest tourist cave in Europe. Be sure not tu miss Škocjan cave park either.
Military museum
Military Museum Tabor may not be as old and as colourful as some of the sights mentioned but it speaks a thousand words and has quickly grown in popularity in the last 20 years. Since opening in the village of Lokev, not far away from Lipica in 1994, it received more than 40 awards for its collection of military uniforms, weapons and equipment from both world wars.
Besides the stones and bora winds that shape the lands and taste of famous prosciutto, Karst area is known for its Teran wine, so make sure to explore the wine road.
